Visitor Comments: I am a native West Virginian who now resides in Charleston, SC. I have enjoyed reading all the information that has been on this website. I was born in New Martinsville, WV in Wetzel County. I have also traveled through Fayette County on my way to visit my family and friends. It is very beautiful. I am proud to be from the great state of West Virginia.

Visitor Comments: I live now in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, but Fayette County is my heart's home. If, like me, you think Mountaintop Removal is destroying what can NEVER be replaced--let me know how I can help! Now they are attacking Gauley Mountain, which forms the lovely backdrop of Ansted, not to mention it's one of the state's most spectacular scenic drives!

It's a beautiful website! It's just that I grieve every time I think of what's being done to destroy our mountains, our rivers, our timber, so the coal barons can make more millions before we go off the coal standard. Sorry to get political, but I can't look at West Virginia's beauty without tears in my eyes.

This message is coming form San Diego CA. I make many trips to WV to visit relatives in various parts of the state. The first (that I can find) bought land in Greenbriar and Monroe counties in 1804. The state calls to me all the time. Pity all those who don't know of the majesty of this wonderful state. As the wife of one cousin said: West Virginia is America's best kept secret.

Thank you for this wonderful site.

My grandfather (Enoch Adkins) and father (Irvin J. Adkins) were miners at ffice:smarttags" />Minden.  Enoch work the mines from the thirties to retirement in the fifties.  My dad, Irvin, work from the early forties until September 1951 when Arbuckle Creek flooded the house.  Our first house in Minden was the first house on the left coming from Oak Hill down old Minden road.  It was next to a slate dump which later slid into the house and onto road.  Luckily, we had move before this happen and as far as I know the house was empty at the time of the incident.  The second house and our family's last was the last house on the right before you came to the company store.  I went my first three grades of school in Minden. This was the building with union hall on one end and had a church service on Sundays. Then it was on to the big elementary school at Rocklick. My first and second grade teacher was Mrs. Cavendish and the third grade teacher was Mrs. Godsey.  They were rough on us kids, but still, I have very fond memories of them.  ffice ffice" />

I would like to write and add some of my young memories about Minden to this history.  Who can I contract or how can I go about doing this?

Thanks so very much for having this site. The recollections it has given me is almost over whelming in remembering these times and people in Minden. Those were hard and very tough times, but, I'm proud to have gone through them.
